Accounts @cs.kuleuven.be
At the Department of Computer Science, we like to know who you are before you can access most of its services.
To be able to use the departmental computer systems and services you can/need to use the following accounts and corresponding passwords:
- Departmental LDAP/login account and password for:
- departmental (system group administered) computer systems (both local on console and remote via ssh and OpenVpn)
- Printer Account
- you can review the information and configuration about your own account
- Departmental Samba account and password for:
- departmental Samba servers with Windows file and printer sharing
- strongly related to the above departmental LDAP/login account: no additional information, just a separate password (because of different password technologies)
- Departmental repository account and password for:
- departmental SCM repository server
- not necessarily related to the above departmental LDAP/login account: also external guests without a departmental LDAP/login account can have a SCM repository account
- Departmental Nextcloud account and password for:
- departmental Nextcloud server
- not necessarily related to the above departmental LDAP/login account: also external guests without a departmental LDAP/login account can have a Nextcloud account
- KU Leuven-wide Intranet-UID account (u-number) and password for:
- student computer room systems on the ground floor
- wireless networks in and around the departmental building but also elsewhere in other KU Leuven sites
- KU Leuven Exchange mailbox, calendar and Lync telephone system
- other KU Leuven-wide services like KULoket, Toledo, SharePoint, VPN ...
- you can review the information and configuration about your own account
These accounts are not activated automatically, but you must do so yourself:
- some by setting an initial password using an activation code
- Departmental LDAP/login account activation page
- KU Leuven-wide Intranet-UID account activation page
- if you don't have an activation code, you can ask helpdesk to create/activate one for you
- others by setting an initial password using your own departmental LDAP/login.
- Departmental Samba account activation page
- Departmental repository account activation page
- Departmental Nextcloud account activation page
- External guests (without a departmental LDAP/login account) must ask their contact person at the department to (ask helpdesk to) initialize a repository and/or Nextcloud account for them
After initial activation, you can of course (and should regularly) change the password for/of these accounts.
Moreover, a typical departmental account:
- should be requested and created well in advance
- belongs to at least one group and probably also to some mail aliases
- has a home directory to store (personal) files in
- is limited by quota because disk space is not unlimited
- has an expiration date:
- usually strongly connected to your official relationship with the KU Leuven, but might not be known/registered correctly at the time your account is/was created - some accounts have special arrangements:
